Earlier this week, the music world learned of another loss among its ranks when entertainment tabloid TMZ reported that Mike Starr, 44, a former bass player for Alice in Chains, had died.
Starr’s body was discovered on Tuesday, March 8, in a Salt Lake City home where he died from an apparent drug overdose. He had an overt history of drug addiction, even appearing on the 2009 season of “Celebrity Rehab.” More recently, he’d been arrested for possession of a controlled substance in Salt Lake City.
Seattle’s Alice in Chains has a dark legacy of losing its members to drugs. In 2002, the band’s original singer and co-founder, Layne Staley, succumbed to a decade of addiction and OD’d on a mix of heroin and cocaine.
Although an official cause of death is still pending, it is believed that prescription pills were responsible for Starr’s untimely demise.

Deftones chose Kerry K, who asked “I love it when you cover other band’s music and put your own spin on it. What Alice in Chains song would or do you cover?”
